Arnold Stalk: My mission behind Las Vegas’ Veterans Village

Our soldiers fight for our freedoms and they risk their lives while doing so. The transition from war zones back to our country can be very complex. They need the necessary tools to make that transition happen. That’s why Veterans Village was created with the help of collaborative partners and sponsors.

Veterans Village is a temporary housing facility that started with the mission of helping our U.S. veterans with not only housing but also comprehensive support services by utilizing collaborative agencies that already exist in Southern Nevada. This former Econo Lodge, located on Las Vegas Blvd., was repurposed and opened in 2012 with 120 units of housing. The facility fits a total of 240 beds for our veterans and their families.

We’re currently in the process of finishing our remodeling and incorporating more programs. Another part of our planning includes 486 additional housing units that are currently in development, which includes a second Veterans Village in the Green Valley area. In addition to these efforts, there are two other apartment complexes under development. The first complex has 200 units and the second has 144 units. And we also plan on opening our Veterans Village thrift shop in April of 2013.

Helping our veterans gives me a sense of satisfaction. It feels great to provide housing for our men and women who risk their lives to defend the freedom that we all enjoy in the United States today.  I am grateful for all the community support to our heroes and their families. It’s being an amazing journey!
